I mentioned you wouldn't like it...both the far left and far right have plenty say about "peacekeepers" and the people in the Administration and the Pentagon at the time who have control of their destinies .... We Americans need to read lots of sides of a situation, IMO. Somalia seems to be a perfectly terrible example of sending America's "best of the best" into a bad situation, and then not supporting them enough to get them out before disaster strikes. >>>>>>>>>>>MAY 30, 2001 MOVEABLE FEAST By Thane Peterson War Is Hell, Especially at the Multiplex Disney's Pearl Harbor is a waste of time -- the polar opposite of General Wesley Clark's book, Waging Modern War yahoo.businessweek.com FIASCO IN SOMALIA. As Clark tells the story of the Kosovo operation, the Pentagon was the main foot-dragger. American generals were adamant that that they wouldn't let U.S. troops be dragged into a ground war with an unclear mission and little public support. "The Pentagon wanted success, too, but sought to keep the mission as limited and risk-free as possible," Clark writes. Pearl Harbor is one of first of several movies on World War II coming out this year. But if syrupy love stories and revisionist history aren't your cup of tea, try Clark's book. Or better yet, catch another movie due out this year, Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War, which is based on a best-selling book about a disastrous 1992 raid by elite American troops in Somalia. In one night of furious fighting, 18 American soldiers were killed and dozens wounded. Horror at TV images of a mutilated American soldier being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu put an immediate halt to that American mission. Black Hawk Down won't be a sweeping epic like Pearl Harbor. But its images are the ones that haunt American generals when they contemplate war these days.
