Noel, So many questions :-) Who put the WMD technology into Saddam's hands? Strange question, do you think arabs are stupid and cannot develop anything on their own? Now having put that aside, the French worked very hard to give them nuclear capability. German, French, British and even US companies sold them chemicals which could be made into WMD - but no one has documented any actual WMD weapons being sold to them (aside from Chinese, Russian and North Korean missiles and missile technology). Who supported Saddam up to the Kuwait war? The Soviets and most of the western world, including the United States. Same kind of thing from the cold war - they were perceived to be the lesser evil. If you examined their weapons systems, chemical plants and biowarfare research centers I think you would find a miniscule US content, a significant European content and and overwhelming Soviet/Russian content. Who said nothing when Saddam gassed the Kurds and the Iranians? You should check google more often. Yes, we didn't prevent it, but neither did any other western power and the Iraqi's never gave advanced warning. As for a response to the attacks - yes at the time it was tepid. To all our shame. What source do you have for 2-3 million dead at Saddam's hand? I actually wonder about answering that one, your unlikely to believe anything not backing your preconceived notions. For example - you probably thought I am a rabid Bush supporter and haven't followed my posts on the Kurds and my disgust at their and the Shias abandonment at the end of the Gulf War. A dark splotch on Bush's fathers record. But as an FYI: UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimated that 1,000,000 Iraqis, incl. 560,000 children, died as a result of malnutrition and disease caused by the international embargo imposed following the invasion of Kuwait. Now if he had already destroyed his weapons back in 1991, why didn't he tell the UN and end this back in Clintons first term? Iran/Iraq war - estimates range from 1 to 1.5 million. Kurds (80's and 90's) - 300,000 Shia's (91-92) - 200,000 Guld War - 150,000 Need more? Unfortunately no one has numbers on his political oppression yet (lots of stories , but no hard numbers or good estimates, yet - but he kept records and your going to love this - videotaped many of the executions).
