CN rail policy 'obscene,' says transport minister
Last Updated Fri, 19 Sep 2003 17:51:56
OTTAWA - Transport Minister David Collenette said it was "obscene" of CN rail to prohibit employees from using the word "Canadian" in reference to the company.

In responding to an internal company memo on Friday, Collenette said he would ensure the policy was changed. He said he would approach the chairman and president of Canadian National Railway Co., which is based in Montreal.

New Democrat MP Bill Blaikie obtained the memo.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Collenette described the company as one of the best railways in North America and said it shouldn't apologize for being Canadian.

The memo instructs employees to use only the name "CN" in the workplace, whether in telephone conversation, e-mail, written correspondence or in identifying themselves on their voice mail.

The memo said such action would help foster a strong corporate identity.

Blaikie attributed the company's policy to American management and ownership. He said Canadian National Railway is becoming less Canadian.

Mark Hallman, a CN spokesman, dismissed the uproar, noting that the company has been marketing itself using its CN logo for the last 40 years.
