Actually, I don't think Arafat says at all that Jews never had anything to do with Palestine Doubt not, Mq. He has said it many times; PA TV has published it over and over; it's official PA policy. At Camp David, Arafat looked President Clinton and Dennis Ross in the eye and told them that a Jewish Temple had never stood in Jerusalem. (They told him not to insult their intelligence.) I'll be glad to dig up the references if you like. Arafat refers continually to "Muslim and Christian holy places" while denying that Jewish holy places even exist. Likewise, it is official PA policy that the Holocaust never happened; the "moderate" Abu Mazen wrote his thesis on this subject. I recently heard a child of Holocaust survivors who had met with a group of Palestinians - all people of good will striving for understanding - whose first question on the Holocaust was "did it really happen?". A natural question, considering they had been taught that it did not, but one very difficult for the children of Auschwitz survivors to deal with. I agree that it is crazy to use ancient history as a land deed. But it is not crazy to respect a people's current religious sensitivies and sense of history. The Jews do respect Muslim religious sensitivies - the Haram al Sharif is still in the hands of Waqf. What do you suppose would be the situation if positions had been reversed? The Arabs do not respect Jewish religious sensitivies. The Jordanians tore down all Jewish synagogues and graves when they held the Old City, the Palestinians torched Joseph's Tomb in Nablus, and Arafat denies that Jewish history or religion even exists.
