There is a a good body of evidence that the Reagan campaign had contact with the Iranian government in 1979/1980 and negotiated a deal to keep the American hostages in captivity until after the 1980 election, so as not to give Carter a last minute advantage in the election (aka October Surprise). I actually saw Iranian president Abolhassan Bani-Sadr on CNN in 1991 stating that there was a deal between his government and the Reagan campaign. Straight from the horses mouth.
