You have raised a number of points which I won't or don't know enough to answer. However, I believe the the main advantage of a GSM/1x phone is that it would allow a GSM operator to transition to CDMA by adding CDMA on top of an existing GSM network to gain both the capacity and data advantage of CDMA while all the legacy stuff will still work. Over time, the GSM usage will decrease as the CDMA usage increases. A number of years ago Vodaphone did some trials to test the idea and the conclusion was that it was feasible.
