QUALCOMM's GSM1x Technology Powers Kyocera's KZ850 Handset for China Unicom's GSM1x Trial
- GSM1x Handset to Demonstrate CDMA2000 Service Using GSM SIM in Suzhou, China -
SAN DIEGO -- August 12, 2003 -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the introduction of Kyocera's first handset supporting GSM1x technology. Based on Kyocera's KZ850 model, which includes an integrated camera and offers high-resolution color graphics and multimedia features, the new GSM1x handset will be available immediately to participants in China Unicom's GSM1x trial in Suzhou, China. This marks the first GSM1x handset for a market trial.
Kyocera's single mode, BREW-enabled GSM1x handset combines a GSM service interface with CDMA2000 premium next-generation services using a GSM SIM card. Because GSM1x is able to leverage existing CDMA2000 1X handset designs, Kyocera and other phone manufacturers can readily integrate the technology into their existing single or multimode handsets.
"Our KZ850 phones will play an integral part in China Unicom's GSM1x phase one trial, and we look forward to continuing our support of GSM1x by incorporating the technology on Kyocera's other commercial handsets to meet the demand of GSM carriers," said Kazuhiro Iwabuchi, general manager of mobile communication equipment engineering division, Kyocera Corporation. "From creating the world's first commercial BREW-enabled wireless phone to GSM1x, we're pleased to collaborate with QUALCOMM in continuing to advance the wireless communications market."
"Kyocera's decision to integrate QUALCOMM's GSM1x technology into its handsets further demonstrates the validity of this solution and will allow Kyocera to deliver a new option for GSM operators worldwide," said George Mansho, senior vice president of corporate global development for QUALCOMM. "Kyocera's GSM1x handset helps fulfill GSM operators' need to provide differentiated services, offering CDMA2000 value-added services to their subscribers while maintaining compatibility with GSM-MAP networks and SIM cards."
GSM1x is a CDMA2000 solution for GSM operators in any band that combines the benefits of CDMA2000 1X and GSM-MAP. GSM1x takes full advantage of an operator's investment in its existing GSM-MAP network, maintaining all key features and services inherent in the system. The GSM1x handset accepts a GSM SIM card and communicates with the GSM-MAP core network. GSM1x will increase an operator's voice and data capacity while enabling a cost effective overlay of CDMA2000 on a GSM network. The GSM1x solution facilitates both GSM and CDMA global roaming. QUALCOMM and Samsung Introduce First Multimode, Multiband GSM1x Handset
- GSM1x Solutions Bring Unmatched Flexibility to Customers and Operators -
NEW ORLEANS -- March 17, 2003 -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and Samsung Electronics, a global leader in telecommunication, semiconductor and digital convergence technology, today announced plans for Samsung to offer multimode GSM1x handsets. This marks the introduction of the first feature-rich multimode, multiband, GSM, GPRS and CDMA2000 1X handset that provides increased voice, data and global roaming capabilities, enabled by the MSM6300™ chipset solution and GSM1x technology solution.
By integrating QUALCOMM's MSM6300 Mobile Station Modem (MSM™) chipset and system software with the GSM1x solution, Samsung will develop and deliver the world's first multimode, multiband GSM1x handset. The MSM6300, the first product to integrate the GSM and CDMA modems into a single chip solution, enables Samsung to design multimode handsets using previous single-mode form factors.
The multimode, multiband GSM1x handset will allow GSM subscribers to roam across GSM and CDMA2000 networks with one SIM subscription, providing world travelers with a true global roaming phone. Additionally, the GSM1x multimode handset will allow operators with both GSM and CDMA2000 networks to offer the benefits of CDMA2000 data and LaunchpadÔ applications to their GSM subscribers.
"Today's announcement of the first true world phone marks a milestone in satisfying operator and customer needs for a flexible, global roaming solution that is fully transparent to the user. The multimode, multiband technology supports a rich set of features on both GSM/GPRS and CDMA2000 networks," said Dr. Irwin Mark Jacobs, chairman and CEO of QUALCOMM. "Through support of GSM1x, this world phone provides new options for operators to economically provide the best service to their customers."
"Samsung is leading the wireless revolution and we believe that migrating toward a solution that fulfills the needs of our GSM and CDMA2000 customers is key for better mobile communications," said Mr. KiTae Lee, president of Telecommunication Network Business, Samsung. "We are excited to be working with QUALCOMM to deliver a true global roaming solution that takes advantage of GSM1x technology."

QUALCOMM and China Unicom Successfully Complete First Phase of GSM1x Technology Trial
- CDMA2000 1X Voice, Data and Enhanced Services Delivered to GSM Subscribers over Commercial CDMA Radio Infrastructure Using GSM SIM and Existing Networks -
SAN DIEGO -— September 17, 2003 -— QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the successful completion of the first phase of a comprehensive GSM1x technology trial in cooperation with China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom), China's second largest mobile telecom carrier. GSM1x is a deployment option allowing GSM carriers to deliver spectrally efficient CDMA2000 1X voice, data and enhanced services utilizing commercial CDMA2000 radio infrastructure equipment while preserving their GSM SIM distribution model, authentication, roaming and GSM back-office systems and processes. The enhanced CDMA2000 1X services include the BREW™ platform, gpsOne™ position location and high-speed data access. Adoption of GSM1x can deliver significant cost savings and early time-to-market to operators with second-generation (2G) or third-generation (3G) spectrum by reusing existing GSM provisioning, billing and service platforms, while creating new revenue opportunities through differentiated voice and data services based on CDMA2000 1X.
Highlighting the advanced level of wireless developments in China, the GSM1x Phase One trial also included successful testing of the world's first GSM and CDMA2000 multimode handset. The QUALCOMM-supplied prototype, QTP6300, supports both GSM and CDMA operation by utilizing the advanced capability of the MSM6300 multimode chip. The QTP6300 was used to demonstrate GSM and CDMA operation with a single UIM, including roaming between GSM and CDMA networks. China Unicom confirmed its strong interest in the potential of multimode handsets for its commercial network.
