As to the rest of your point, I agree that it is sometimes important to understand motivation (not always), but that doesn't mean that society has to bend or break its standard rules to allow the belief. This is what Mojo wants -- he wants an exception from societal rules because he's motivated by a belief that is contrary to what society has agreed is acceptable.

No belief or motivation makes it acceptable for a person, for example, to set a street bum on fire. Does it? The belief may persuade us that the perpetrator is mentally deranged and should be hospitalized rather than imprisoned, but we still don't accept that it is an okay thing to do no matter what their belief or motivation.
