And there is the other reason. I doubt it hurts their senatorial chances for reelection. As long as they perform reasonably well on TV, and don't embarass themselves by the level of votes (well, even Orin Hatch, who did miserably, did fine), look at all the free media coverage they get. And, there is the chance, they may leap a notch in the media coverage bit. Do well and you get all those invites to Sunday TV shows. Certainly helps senate reelection chances. So what's the downside?
