Hmm, many nations have never had a problem with "errors" in the election mechanisms and process...

All nations have this problem. Every polling process has a margin of error, including every election system ever devised. The problem does not become significant until the margin of error exceeds the margin of victory. This seldom happens, but it could happen anywhere.

The electoral college system complicates things to some extent: when a key state with many electoral votes has a very close elections, you end up with a potentially decisive block of votes hanging on a result that is below the margin of statistical significance. Problem.
