RR, Spitzer has made a Faustian bargain. He's now a whore for Wall Street, and they will give him the governorship in exchange for the limp dick act Elliot ended up with in his prosecution of the "malefactors of great wealth". Spitzer has been corrupted.

I think that Spitzer has a lock on the 2006 nomination. While I do tend to agree with Ray that Spitzer was a bit lenient with Wall Street, I would not go so far as to suggest that he struck a Faustian deal. The New Yorker had an interesting profile of Spitzer several months ago. I got the impression that the New York Attorney General's resources, both in terms of finances and personnel, are very limited and that he felt the need to strike some sort of deal rather then take it to the next level. On the plus side, the settlements will aid in the prosecution of the civil suits. I would also not be surprised if some of the unearthed documents become the basis for some additional criminal prosecutions. As a general rule, the various state Attorney General's are not equipped to investigate fraud at this level. Some of the states are currently wrestling with the feds over jurisdictional issues.
