Noel,

If JohnM can argue Clinton's military won the wars In Afghanistan and Iraq, I suspect its ok to call the recession and the Intel failures his as well.

Its a matter of when you start the clock. Liberals cannot blame the economic issues and corporate scandals on Bush and get a pass on the others. But Republicans ask for this when they keep blaming Clinton for everything.

We all (and lets be fair - we were originally all on SI to discuss our stocks and early retirement plans) got caught up in the biggist bubble economy since the tulip craze. Clinton ,and all of us, benefited greatly from the runnup, but it had already burst well before the 2000 election.

Clintons team took a pretty dim view of the military and Intel communities at first, but downsizing was started by Bushs father - no cold war - no justification for the size and reach. Bad decision, but hind sight is always 20-20.

I doubt anyone else would have played it substantially different at a content level. Look at Cheney's original plans for the military before 9/11 and you see big shifts, but continued downsizing.

John

Noel, I see you didn't read the link, nor the footnotes. If you had, you would know that one just can't drop someone from the air and have him/her run to the nearest villagers to gather intel. It takes years to gather information.

When one cuts the service, there is no more information.
