The nine other Democratic candidates also have spent the last few months meeting with Democratic activists across the country, getting feedback on various issues and testing their campaign lines.

"I'm sure Howard Dean has tried a variety of things along the way," said veteran Iowa activist Jeff Link. "By the time people began paying attention, he had it down pretty good."


Didn't we used to have candidates with honest convictions and beliefs instead of field-tested "lines"? Maybe a few decades ago?

This presidential campaign is shaping up as a talk-radio bashfest on the issues, a combination of "American Idol" and "Survivor" for the personality horse race and more marketing in the political messages than the commercials in between the sound bites to sell us more SUVs.

It really sucks.
