Having lived in various semiauthoritarian states, I don't see US politicians going that far, placing their interests entirely above their constituents. But what really scares me is the way that politics and entertainment are totally blurred now in America.

The "discourse" mirrors the talk radio ranting on every AM dial around the country. The commercials are targeted and marketed as slickly as anything to sell soap or SUVs, and the "political journalists" spend their time dwelling on scandal, horse races and gaffes.

The various SI political threads reflect this emphasis. The issue-scandal posting ratio is maybe 1-20 if we are lucky, probably less.

How the hell does a political process deal with serious issues and come up with serious solutions in that climate?

I don't think it can be done. Which is a very bad sign indeed for moderate America that wants results more than another reality TV show.

JMHO.

Coz,

I agree with you about Iqbal Latif. He does present some highly informed material and decent analysis.
