China blasts US for listing it as major drugs producer
Agence France-Presse
Beijing, September 19

China on Friday lashed out at the United States for including it on a list of major drug-transit or illicit drug producing countries, saying it was a mistake that should be corrected.

"The US act is wrong," foreign ministry spokesman Kong Quan said, adding that Washington should "correct its mistake".

China was included in the report alongside 22 other countries, including Myanmar, India and Thailand.

However, a White House statement noted that "a country's presence on the 'Majors List' is not an adverse reflection of its government's counter-narcotics efforts or level of cooperation with the United States".

"One of the reasons that major drug-transit or drug producing countries are placed on the list is the combination of geographical, commercial, and economic factors that allow drugs to transit or be produced despite the concerned governments enforcement measures," the White House said.

Only two countries -- Haiti and Myanmar -- were singled out for having "failed demonstrably" to crack down on drugs trafficking.

Kong claimed that Beijing has made drugs prohibition a priority and set in motion policies and measures to prohibit drugs.

China has also kept close contact with all nations, including the United States, in this regard and made "remarkable achievements," he added.
