a couple weeks back INSG joined the Symbian companion program. This program ships insg software with the symbian software--therby enabling symbian os buyers to use insg ssp as they wish.

symbian.com

That's an upgrade of insg previous relationship with symbian. In June INSG joined
the symbian platinum partner program. This program gave insg access to symbian marketing and source code.

Bitfone is a part of the symbian platinum partner program
symbian.com

But I see no indication that bitfone is a part of the Symbian companion program. This program was first formed in April Judging by this article: Apr 24 M-Systems first partner to join Symbian Companion Technology Program
symbian.com

since that time a look at symbian community press releases shows that bitfone is not a part of the Companion Technology Program
symbian.com

In fact only five companies are in the program so far. These include:
M-Systems (NASDAQ: FLSH)
Beatnik
Mobile Innovation Ltd
ZOOMON
Insignia Solutions

Insignia and Metrowerks Announce Secure System Provisioning On Demand Service for Mobile Phone Industry

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

AUSTIN, Texas & FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 29, 2003--

New Service Helps Phone Manufacturers Broadcast Firmware Updates
For Over-The-Air Repair Across Multiple Operator Networks

Metrowerks Corporation (NYSE:MOT), a leader in development
solutions for wireless markets, plans to extend its wireless solution
portfolio by hosting, selling and marketing a service from Insignia
Solutions(R) (Nasdaq:INSG) that enables phone manufacturers to
remotely repair software on mobile devices across multiple networks.
Based on Insignia's Secure System Provisioning (SSP) product, the SSP
On Demand(TM) service provides a complete network infrastructure that
leverages Metrowerks' world-wide hosting capabilities to broadcast
software repairs securely over the air. The service dramatically
reduces software recall and customer care costs for manufacturers by
avoiding the need to physically recall phones.

"Insignia and Metrowerks provide a crucial new service for phone
manufacturers," said Susan Macke, VP Sendo. "Providing the ability to
upgrade the firmware of our mobile phones across multiple networks
will enable on-the-fly upgrades, leading to a superior consumer
experience for our operator partners and their customers."
SSP On Demand is expected to be marketed, sold and supported by
Metrowerks through its worldwide sales force. Insignia's server
software solution is planned to be hosted and managed at Metrowerks'
hosting centers, which already provide managed developer services for
several major phone manufacturers and wireless operators.
The introduction of the Metrowerks and Insignia offering comes
just days after Symbian and Mentor Graphics announced that they will
offer Insignia's SSP client technology. Symbian will offer the
Insignia client in forthcoming releases of its operating system, while
Mentor Graphics will offer it with its Nucleus operating system, which
currently ships on more than 150 phones. These agreements mean that
all new phones running the Symbian or Nucleus operating systems with
the royalty-free SSP client can upgrade firmware using the SSP On
Demand service. This demonstrates Insignia's position as the effective
standard for emerging remote upgrade technology and reinforces
Metrowerks' leadership in helping wireless carriers, device
manufacturers, and platform vendors arm their development communities
with the tools, services and support needed for success.

"This new service is designed to enable phone manufacturers to efficiently maintain the integrity of their devices regardless of the operator network they are running on," said Jim Welch, president and CEO, Metrowerks. "We believe that SSP On Demand ultimately lowers costs for handset manufacturers and carriers while improving the customer experience among end users."

The SSP On Demand service is designed to help phone manufacturers to securely publish new firmware revisions and have those updates broadcast using efficient packaging technology directly to devices. While firmware revisions go through the same quality assurance and operator approvals, the wireless delivery mechanism now avoids the need to physically return the phone to a service center, which can lead to dramatically lowering costs and improving the consumer experience. Phone manufacturers typically pay for the service on a per firmware upgrade model.

"When fully integrated into an operator's network, our Secure System Provisioning solution enables a wide range of operator-centric repair and dynamic capability services that deliver bottom line revenue increases," said Mark McMillan, CEO, Insignia Solutions. "SSP On Demand provides the ideal complement to this for phone vendors as it offers an immediate solution to growing customer care costs due to software updates or upgrades. Through our partnership with Metrowerks and the introduction of SSP On Demand, Insignia now has a solution for both key market segments."
