Opposition in P.A. to American Anti-Terror Efforts

Palestinian Media Watch (PMW), an Israeli organization monitoring the PA media, reports on growing opposition in the PA areas to aspects of the United States' war against terrorism.

PMW reported two weeks ago that PA social organizations and NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) were refusing to sign a US-required anti-terror clause obligating them not to transfer money to terrorists or terrorist organizations. Opposition in the PA to the US demand is growing more organized as 26 organizations recently gathered in Bethlehem to publicly declare they would not sign the clause, and an even larger gathering is being planned.

PMW also notes that the official PA daily reported this week that, "Egyptian intellectuals promised to organize a media campaign [against the US demands] ...They rejected the American document that established a condition and link between funding and signing." PMW Director Itamar Marcus notes that it is "ironic that on the very same page, right under the article repeatedly attacking USAID, is an advertisement by USAID offering scholarships to Palestinian students for study in the US."

"The common premise is that the general PA population rejects the murder of civilians through suicide terrorism," Marcus adds. "However, when the entire organizational infrastructure, including social workers, psychologists, medical organizations and all social welfare organizations, refuse to sign an anti-terror declaration, it points to a PA society unified in their support for suicide bombers."
