Maybe I wasn't clear. High casualties in a war is whats politically damaging. It was damaging enough to Johnson to not seek renomination for the office of Chief Executive. Abraham Lincoln had the same problem, the Feds had lost nearly half a million men in battle. What families that had every single son killed in battle in President's created Civil War, after all Lincoln invaded the South not vice versa, were going to vote for Lincoln again? The point is the war in Iraq has had a few hundred casualties, not five hundred thousand plus and the anti-war sentiment just is not there. Johnson had almost 50000 casualties on his hand and he was screwed politically. Bush isn't screwed at all at 300 KIAs, no way. In fact its miracle by war standards to have that few casualities. Goes to show you all the dollars spent on high technology and R&D saved a lot of lives both friendly and civilians from collateral damage.
