No Rumsfeld is different. The intial War Plans for Iraq were handed back by Rumsfeld to the Planners saying to be more creative. To me, more creative means take more risk. What Rumsfeld demanded was the use of far less troops. They took a huge gamble that the population would not be in every building room and corner with a fully automatic weapon. You look at the Soviets taking Berlin in 1945. The Soviets attacking in overwhelming force with over 1 million men. The Germans defending were hard core SS troops and volksturm with Panzerfausts, and whatever small arms including last ditch weapons they could scrounge up. The Volksturm and SS were in every building and room and the Soviets had to go room to room, house to house to kill every last one of them. Rumsfeld took a huge gamble that the Iraqi Army and Republican Guard would not do the same. In fact tapes from Usam Bin Laden instructed Sadam to do the same thing. Rumsfeld got lucky in that the country was divided into 4 sectors with incompetents such as Oudai commanding a sector. They placed all the troops in the open to be absolutely anhilated by coaliton air power. Now after the major combat operations are over, they are finding they do not have enough troops to securing the borders against incoming foreign fighters and smuggling of new small arms, ammunition and RPGs into the country. By the way the soviets lost over 100,000 killed in the single action of Berlin. Thats nearly twice what we lost in Vietnam over 10 years, the Soviets suffered that in the few weeks it took to take Berlin.
