Lizzie, re "I don't think stock options are considered financing for operations "

When common shares outstanding increases, financing is occurring -- no matter the cause, IMHO. An increase in common shares due to an IPO? -- it's financing. Due to a secondary offering? -- it's financing. Due to the purchase of another company with stock? -- it's financing.

If you don't believe me, take a look at an annual report, or an SEC 10-K filing. You do that on occasion, don't you? Or are you so averse to data-mining, that you don't even look at a Statement of Stockholders' Equity?

Give me one -- just one -- plausible reason why the increase in common shares outstanding -- due to any other reason -- should not also be considered financing.
