So what is wrong with paying people a living wage for doing work on state and federal projects?

DB wages are exactly that, living wages, where you can support a family.

Non union wages are generally lower, but not that much lower. It's not like the unions are asking for the moon.

Laborers are family bread winners. The money they make allows them to put a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs. There is not a lot left over beyond that. They work hard for that money.

How is this communism?

The wages paid for union labor are determined in a free market, and are part of that process. For the government to recognize this and then codify it as part of the Davis Bacon Act is as American as apple pie.
