Jay, I don't have a ready to go definition of "seriously bad". I think it's probably like pornography, hard to define, but I'll know it when I see it. True, Kiwi dollars have gone up from US40c to US60c, which is a full 50% improvement [over three years actually, not one] as well as which, their houses have gone up in value by something like 15%. So things are not all bad. But they could be so much better. "Seriously bad" would be something along the lines of Haim's MADness* about "let's nuke China" for a final solution [or whatever crazy idea he was propounding] gaining some kind of following. I suppose it already has a following, but I think the numbers are still trivial. I think most Americans still would have no idea where China is on a map and quite like buying stuff cheap from China. I don't think they are up to the sophisticated thinking needed to both locate China AND nuke it. When they start getting maps out with China highlighted and X marking the spot, I'll start to think the MADness has passed sars as a problem. Hu Jintao can probably keep King George II calm and Syria and Iran will be enough to get him to the next election.
