The people Israel is fighting are the people they displaced. 'Scuse me? Did you miss the previous 5 Arab-Israeli wars? Who was fighting those? Who is training and funding the current war? You think Hamas raises money from bake sales? I forgot to mention Iran, whose proxy force Hizbullah, is shelling Israel from its line of rockets in Lebanon. If it were just the Israelis vs the Palestinians, it would have been settled long ago. The Palestinians know that the other Arabs won't ride over the hill for them, but the Arabs keep promising and the Palestinians can never give up hope. Indeed, for all the fashionable discussion of Palestinian "hopelessness", they are fighting a war of choice because they are hopeful of victory. If they really were hopeless, then they would be looking to cut a deal. If you give a despot a lever, the lever will be used. Who provided the lever? The UN, by feeding the refugees for 60 years at US taxpayer expense. If those despots had had to feed them on their own nickel, they would have looked to resettle them in a hurry. The Palestinians were offered a choice: remain in a state where they could never be anything but second class citizens, or become refugess. That did not give much opportunity for compromise. The plan, in case you forgot, was for a partition of Palestine into two states, one Jewish and one Arab. Which would have given Jordan + Arab Palestine = 90% of the original Mandate, to the Arabs. Quite a bit of opportunity for compromise. But the Mufti wasn't into compromise. He was into implementing Hitler's Final Solution.
