They're down! (A shade over 2.4 tenths of one whole percent.)

I'd have expected a bigger drop, purely on the basis of the dollar weakness in the second quarter. Doesn't look like the boycott is doing much.

Cheese, anyone?

I believe that the dollar was down about 16% against the Euro during the same time. If that is so, in cases of wine, for example, they would be down 16% in volume.

In reality people probably did cut back on obvious French items, such as wine. I do know that tourism to Europe is down.

but lets look at 2001 vs 2002, more relevant

2001 - 30.408,186,000
2002 - 28,240,081,000

very substantial decline and do not forget to adjust for stronger Euro which would make it even worse for france.

Now lets look at exports

2001 - 19,864,479,000
2002 - 19,016,155,000

and finally the most relevant number, deficit

2001 - 10,543,707,000
2002 - 9,223,926,000

even without adjustment for stronger Euro that is a decline by 12.5%.

with correction for stronger Euro you will be in 20%-25% decline. And you showed that since then there is even more decline.

now if we look at conservative estimates of potential present value if that would continue you would be looking at about 30 billion - 40 billion. I guess France paying for Iraq war after all <gggggggg>

you have to compare pre 9/11 to post 9/11 and not post 9/11 to post 9/11...
