Branches of government don't talk to each other. Got the mail this morning...Notice of Registration for voting next week for hubby & I arrived. No problem there. BUT, there also arrived, to our address (which was okay, power of attorney & that sort of stuff), a green letter from Elections Ontario wanting to have an address update for the voter's list for my mother-in-law. Fine again, except that she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 1995, declared incompetent a couple of years after that, spent from January 2000 on in a care facility, and passed away in November 2001. Nice...glad I intercepted it and not hubby, he would have gone up one side & down the other of someone for that piece of incompetence. Phoned the number on the page, and another one from the Notice of Registration cards, and was told to take the paper to the polling station on election day and they would filter it up the chain to have her removed from the voter's list. Her name actually isn't there, but they haven't removed her from the database. Couldn't do it over the phone with anyone I talked to.

Thanks for letting me rant,
Margie

Kitchener: If you see a driver using the turn signal, you can bet he's from out of town. The locals don't seem to know what they're for. That's Toronto...

On a 60kph thoroughfare cross from right lane to middle lane NO signal @ 80 KPH
Cross from middle lane to left lane NO signal @ 65 kph.
Once in left lane reduce speed to 45 kph so as not to miss imminent left turn lane 2 klics ahead.. Avoid all use of mirrors unless hair is askew, nose needs picking, or you must converse with passenger in back seat..
Cross from left lane to left turn lane NO signal 30 kph.
Once firmly in left turn lane and almost at a stop turn on left signal and stop just inside intersection to secure the turn... wait.
When your light turns RED you are clear to go.. step on the gas and proceed through intersection slowly... Make sure your index finger is prepared to flip at all those people cursing you as they miss their advanced green... Yell at your kid to make sure groceries are held firmly in place by seat belts and to not hang out the window by more than half...

Alternative plan... turn on direction signal (preferably but not necessarily towards desired direction) which initiates special Toronto cloaking device (Probably Kligon in design).. and just go.. do not hesitate, do NOT check your mirrors... shields are up...

Toronto: I've never seen so many people driving with
their left arm hanging out the window.
Funny I don't notice that (Except for me of course) Likely a downtown thing..

I lived in London before TO... it's better IMO

sigh..

What are Diamond Lanes and what are drivers supposed to do when encountering them?

Basically the local governments convert a lane...
.. for a certain time (say "7am-10am" and "4pm-7pm")
.. for certain traffic - typically buses + taxes but sometimes, not always, cars with THREE or more people (commuters); or for some places "just" three or more people (typically highway)
.. for certain stretches of road
.. typically the rightmost lane (where it may be "parking" during those times anyways is common; cuz now it ain't allowed)

The goal really is to ensure that "hired" services and "commuters" get preferred treatment. However, I have found numerous issues:
(A) people making rights, typically try to get in that lane WAY too early - and should be ticketed
(B) trucks/vans are parked with flashers on (even though sign says "NO STOPPING ANYTIME") for deliveries - and those vehicles in the commuter lane must swing OUT OF and then back IN TO the lane; the parked cars should be ticketed
(C) vehicles that are not allowed in the lane often drive they - should be ticketed
(D) I think I have seen in say 7 years of city driving where there are diamond lanes, ONCE someone getting a ticket -- being caught in the lane without the requirements

Today for example, there is a 4 lane road - the far right is used to feed a highway; turn right down the street; then merge to 3 lanes. To be an ass; and save about 3 minutes, I could go in the far RIGHT as long as humanly possible - or I see a fish or I see Mario and his truck, and cut in front. Or I can eat the 3 minutes and stay in any of the other 3 lanes and slowly plod ahead. That was today. Tomorrow I will save the 3 minutes. But here is an example of where people take the DIAMOND LINE (mine wasn't) and avoid all that traffic, and merge near the end. There are a total of TWO such instances on my way home or to work.

The other great thing about a diamond lane - MOST PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND AND STAY AWAY. So I can easily go down Yonge street just North of Steeles all the way to the subway at Finch in the diamond lane, at 9pm, going anywhere from 80-100KM/h -- because everyone is avoiding the lane thinking it is illegal at that time of night.

Cheers all...
