You have to dismiss the argument that Clinton used when he took over in a downturn, and the argument used today by the Bush opposition, that tax cuts for the rich don't create jobs.

It's a strain to attempt creation of jobs from the top down. The investments take much longer to hit the streets, the wealthy use money in ways less directly tied to jobs, such as the consumption-based lower portion of the economy, but the wealthy do have a reaction closely tied to the upcoming election -- they contribute $$ if they know they're going to get $$ reduction on their taxes. That's why Bush is able to raise $1/2 billion this go-round. It costs the country hundreds of billions, but he gets $1/2 billion. That's how it works in Washington.

That's why I'm in favor of a non-Washingtonian taking over the sordid mess.
