I think it is fair to say the US and Bin Laden had a common interest in the Afghan conflict during the Reagan/Bush years ans there would have been no impetus to go after him at that time...J.

That is the impression I got from reading Charlie Wilson's War by George Crile. There was never any direct mention of OBL but there were of several others. Maybe he was promoted by some New York Times journalist that wasn't there.
