I thought your discomfort was at the point where it became a federal case or that legislation was enacted that provided a beaurocratic method of exacting his exemption.

I think that setting up a big bureaucracy to handle petitions for exemption is enormous overkill--expensive and wasteful. And a slippery slope if I ever saw one. Usually if there are to be exemptions to laws, the exemption is built into each individual law. You know, this law doesn't apply to small business, for example, or to religious organizations, or to people over the age of eighty. That seems to me to be the sensible way to handle an exemption.

I wouldn't label that "discomfort." In fact, if there were such a bureaucracy, I might apply for an ALJ job. Could be interesting.
