After 25 percent growth in 2003, taking the total to $6.5 billion, DisplaySearch predicts a growth in TFT LCD manufacturing equipment spending of 27 percent in 2004 moving the market up to an annual total of $8.3 billion in 2004. Spending is expected to rise in response to strong demand for notebook computers, LCD computer monitors and LCD televisions, the market research company said. For 2003 DisplaySearch predicts a 42 percent growth in the number of large-area TFT LCDs manufactured, taking the total to 97.2 million panels. The corresponding revenue growth is 32 percent taking the annual market to $23.1 billion. In addition, with more than 25 companies currently launching LCD televisions, DisplaySearch is forecasting an 87 percent compound annual growth rate over the next several years to take the market to 31 million units in 2007. The LCD desktop computer monitor market is benefiting from replacement demand while the notebook computer market is expected to rise more than 25 percent in 2003. As a result supplies are tight, prices are high and panel suppliers are bringing forward investments in fabs from early 2005 to late 2004. However after the surge in demand expected in 2004, DisplaySearch predicts a large decline in capital expenditure in 2005. In 2003 Taiwan is expected to lead LCD manufacturing equipment spending with 49 percent of the market. Taiwan is expected to be the largest purchaser of equipment in 2004 as well. Over the period 2002 to 2004 Samsung is expected to be the largest investor in TFT LCD capacity with a 14.2 percent share of total spending, followed by LG.Philips at 12.2 percent. Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition equipment is expected to be the largest equipment category in the TFT LCD equipment market, reaching $700 million in revenues in 2004, or about 8.4 percent of the market.
