Nice statement. Sometimes Lemann is quite good.

But I think he misses the fundamental point about the way the US pursues "democracy" in other countries. And the way this present invasion is part of that longer, larger history.

US interests in a stable Iraq, well positioned within the US orbit, are much more important to the Bush administration leadership than a democratic Iraq, moving out of its orbit. Like Iran in 53, Chile in the early 70s, and a rather long list of other places, self interest trumps democracy, self determination, etc., particularly in regional areas. I don't see this moment as any different.

It's interesting to read the recent book on Iran in 53 and the way in which the overthrow could not occur until Truman was out of office. Took Dulles and Eisenhower before it could take place.
