We had competent leadership in WWII.

After every great war there is an examination of tactics, methods, and tools of war. After WWII the tactics moved away from massed armies to more covert guerilla tactics. The U.S. is still trying to fight WWII and is keeps losing worse as the enemy perfects methods to nullify the advantage of massed armies. First Korea, then Vietnam, now Iraq. Saddam and the Iraqi forces learned a few things in the last dozen years.
