Here's another hypothetical for the group to consider.

An employee of the Israeli embassy in Washington has just heard that his entire family -- wife, 2 sons, daughter -- was killed by a Palestinian suicide bomber who bombed a bar mitzvah that they were attending for a family friend. Distraught, all that he cared for in life at an end, he takes his gun and starts wandering aimlessly to find an appropriate place to kill himself. As he passes through the mall he hears cheering, and remembers that the President was to make a speech that day. Without really thinking about it, since he is so upset, he automatically wanders over to the edge of the crowd. As he looks aimlessly around he sees an arab-looking man in traditional arab headdress running toward the site of the speech. As he thinks of his wife and children dead at the hands of an arab who probably looked just like this one a wave of anger at all arabs pours through him, and, in a fit of madness, he pulls out his gun and shoots the man dead.

A moment later there is a large explosion and the man's body basically disappears in a huge blast.

It turns out that the man was carrying a bomb which, his accomplices admit, he was going to hurl at the President It appears inevitable that if our man had not shot him, he would have killed the President and a large number of other innocent people. By shooting, the diplomat saved many lives.

So.

Should he be charged with murder?
Should he be given a medal?
Should he be excused as having acted under the impulse of temorary insanity?
If none of these, what should happen to him?
