I think bears like to have caves nearby, and we have a few of those in the vicinity. There is an area called Tories' Den where they are particularly abundant. There is a story behind that name, but I'm not sure what it is...

I don't think it's too uncommon that they come around houses, I know they like birdfeeders. Until this year the only other time I saw a bear in this town was several years ago when I was driving and one crossed the road in front of me. He had come out of an area between two housing developments!
