Beijing, September 23

China, already boasting the world's largest population of mobile users, added another 4.67 million cellphone subscribers in August, the telecoms regulator reported.

Upwardly mobile China now has a total of 244.12 million cellphone users, the Ministry of Information Industry said on its website, www.mii.gov.cn.

The country added 38.11 million mobile users in the first eight months of 2003, it said, for a monthly average of 4.76 million new users.

Analysts said growth in mobile users was expected to slow slightly this year from 2002, when between five million and six million new users were being added every month in the market served by China Mobile and China Unicom.

The two companies are locked in a fierce battle for new users, but have said they will also focus on making profits.

A cheap wireless service offered by fixed-line phone firms China Telecom and China Netcom had played a part in denting user growth at the mobile companies, analysts said.

China added 4.18 million new fixed-line subscribers in August for a total of 244.93 million people, the ministry said.
