China is an exporter of refined zinc and an importer of cons. The Northern Miner of Aug 4-10, 2003 had a good metals commentary. Chinese net exports of zinc in May were 10,000 tonnes, way down from monthly average of 33,700 tonnes in the preceding year. In the first 5 months of this year , Chinese net exports were 90,000 tonnes, about 1/2 of what they did in 2002. If these current low export volumes are maintained then the Western market could move into a meaningful deficit this year.
We must keep our eyes peeled for more data later this year.
