I suspect a good part of what's happening here is the FDA struggling with what is the best test to use for severe AD patients. It might well be that the MME is not very sensitive or reliable when the patients are advanced.

Note that if memantine is indeed not working for the advanced patients it implies it must be having a dramatic effect on the moderate patients. But from what I can tell it looks like it does work for advanced patients - just not for their scores on the MME.

You make a very valid point - you can easily get improvement (like your mom remembering your name) that isn't captured by a simplistic test like the MME.
