Ahem!!....according to the Office of Personnel Management, total federal civilian employment in March 2003 = 2,738,344--far less than the alleged 12 million government employee figure recently quoted by Elroy from NY University and Brookings Institution.

Also somewhat below the 2.9 million figure I knew to be a fact--a couple of decades ago!

There has been a longstanding effort by the feds to contract out many tasks to the private sector and reduce the so-called payroll, so all you economist-type beancounters can now argue over whether the government is "creating wealth and jobs" in the private sector or simply making some government functions more expensive. (A lot of debate on this issue goes on every day in the halls of government, trust me.)
