I would wager, the indirect cost of lawyers attacking the health care industry is far higher than the cost of waste in the bureaucracy.

How many tests are performed simply to protect a doctor or hospital?

How many doctors are now quitting certain fields of medicine, because of ridiculously high malpractice fees?

How many drugs are dispensed as protection against liability?

How many new gadgets are purchased, when the current ones are working just fine, as part of a risk management tool to defend against being suid?

How many doctors are quitting the profession all together, or electing not to take on the burden of paying off student loans, which many times exceed a hundred grand because of the high cost of medical malpractice? This in turn is limiting the supply of doctors and driving up costs.

How many scams have people pulled on the system by faking back injuries, neck injuries and so forth, in order to rack in a huge settlement?

I'm sure I could go on...

TORT reform, should be number two behind structurally reforming our public education system on domestic issues.
