Pakistani gets US citizenship for bravery in Iraq

WASHINGTON: A Pakistani who fought bravely in Iraq and was seriously injured has been granted immediate citizenship by President Bush. Sergeant Wasim Khan, who hails from Pakistan and held a green card, joined the US army and was shipped to Baghdad. He was wounded while serving in Baghdad on June 1 when his squad, which was providing security to a large and crowded market, came under attack by snipers. Despite being hit, Wasim Khan pulled himself from the vehicle he was riding and continued to command his troops while offering protection to Iraqi civilians in the area. He was later flown to Washington where he is recuperating at the Walter Reed Army Medical Centre. The ceremony was held at the hospital. Mr Khan was in a wheelchair as Eduardo Aguirre, the director of the US Citizenship and Naturalisation Service, admitted the oath of loyalty to him. Everyone becoming a US citizen has to take that oath. The US official said, “As a naturalised citizen myself, there is no greater honour for me than to welcome a true American hero as our newest citizen.” —Khalid Hasan
