National politics comes in because the RNC-Enron-Bushie Texans were the ones who put their weight and money behind trying to destroy Grey Davis and blame him unfairly for the energy crisis they themselves created. It's been a longterm plan of theirs and this is the climax for them. But Bush is so unpopular now it will probably backfire.

Now, with the 2004 race coming up, Arnold has pledged to support Bush. In my mind that disqualifies him as a "peoples candidate". But it means he's a big player in the 2004 race because if he were to win the Dems might have to spend money defending California from Bush. Also, the GOP would be able to counter the heart of the progressive movement in this country, especially in terms of environmentalism vs. polluters.
