First gulf war was not a unilateral neoCON lying criminal exercise. Father Bush took the whole UN with him with a single purpose of liberating Kuwait. Period.

It wasn't ours to take then either. Bush senior was in bed with the Saudis, they have plenty of oil. And his advisors told him that going to Baghdad would likely result in a guerilla war that would in the end prove costly.

Powell urged him to end the war as US forces were literally wiping out the Iraqi Army like a shooting gallery.

But now, things with the Saudis, may not be so cozy, post 9-11. Bush junior may not have confidence that the Saudi royals can continue to control the oil from an internal uprising. The US departed Saudi Arabia to make it look like they were breaking ranks with the Saudi royal family, to mainly quell internal problems.

Bush senior realized that he needed to have the world behind him. Junior was not as well advised as his dad.
