I think other problems relate to the crappy condition of the pipelines, pumping stations and refineries...this before the war.

And don't forget the looting. Not really sabotage, which means blowing up the stuff rather that stealing it.

Lizzie: I have seen many comments on this in the media. What it refers to is originally we thought that the Iraqi oil production would help defray some of the costs of reconstruction, but with the Sabotage the output is so low and the cost of the damage so high that it doesnt even pay to keep it running. I saw a Congressman the other day say something that made A LOT of sense to me though. His idea was that we could perhaps recoup some of our up front costs in reconstructing the water and electrical industries in the future. I presume that he meant we would treat those costs sort of like a bond which the Iraqi utilities would repay over time. Made a lot of sense to me. JDN
