Rodney, we agree. SI search still isn't working, but I found one of my more recent posts on It. Message 18012682 It's my favourite topic and you'll find rants going back years.

Also, check out Ray Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual Machines" penguinputnam.com and Bill Joy's "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us" wired.com and Stephen Hawking's rants about why we need to turbocharge our brains to keep up with computer power if we want to stay in the game. See "Life in the Universe" hawking.org.uk Not to mention Ted Kaczynski's manifesto: panix.com and Tim McVeigh's last words [he selected "Invictus" as a quote - outpost-of-freedom.com ]

That's quite an eclectic mix.

The transition isn't really an issue. There are just the usual ups and downs in economic affairs and adjustments to changes in technology and political situations, same as always. Essentially, as you said, we'll be ignored, just as we ignore chimps and other monkeys [unless they become too intrusive in which case they are in trouble].

A computer which can not only process data but can also move around in 3D with the skills which people have and physically manipulate the environment will be a long time coming. Computers as the brains and us as the muscle and movement is the obvious answer for a long time [as is already underway in many respects].
