Brian, your point is taken. This article says Nasdaq margin is higher now than in March 2000. cbs.marketwatch.com

I submit it's a lot safer now, with recovery just starting, to be on margin than it was in March 2000.

Brian, this poster agrees with you >FWIW, all short sales take place in a margin account. Technically, since you are borrowing the shares, its a margin loan, even if your equity exceeds the proceeds. Larger guys and hedge funds like me negotiate rebates that allow us to reinvest the proceeds in a yielding instrument to offset the vig of the margin.<
