and am not important enough to believe I deserve an exception to the accepted societal codes of manners That's always an important thing to assess. So much to the art of deciding what's best to do is determining whether the thing is about you and when it's so very much not about you. Another is the power relationship. A third is the default. And a fourth is the sensitivity level. Others may go by traditional rules and still others may assess the politics, but I prefer my touchstones.
