Given the broad scope of this thread, I doubt anything could truly be O.T. Believing that readers of this thread are internet literate, I thought some might like

In an informal survey of news librarians who use search engines all day long, most, but not all, use Google as their primary search engine. Their No. 2 choices included AlltheWeb, Teoma, AltaVista (great once more), KartOO, Hotbot, Ixquick and Vivisimo. For specialized searches, there were sites such as RocketNews, Google and AltaVista news sites.
