You left out the "Richard Russell said today" <G>

I was thinking, "Gee I never knew these things about Les, what has happened to make him get so verbose all of a sudden?"

And: "Gee if Les is seeing things this way, things must be even worse than I thought!"

I think there's a lot that is correct about what Russell says, but I think he underestimates the ability to the United States to turn things around when confronted with a real threat or challenge. For example, if Bush would spend a hundred billion on a project to make the United States self-sufficient in energy, and tap into all the scientific and engineering intelligence available, a great deal could be done. Instead, he sets about straightening out the Middle East, something that no one knows how to do.
