I caught the tail end of something on NPR a few minutes ago, probably about Said, saying "the esteemed scholar died yesterday." Followed by a tasteful little elegiac snippet of orchestral horn wail, the kind one heard a lot of after 9/11 and during the war in Iraq.

Why am I not surprised? I read the NYT obit, which was more critical than I expected, as it included several quotes from Said opponents like Lewis, who said that Said had turned questions of great importance into polemics, which he did.

Thanks for the al Aqsa info. Of course they blame the Israelis. If a member of the Waqf only stepped in dog shit, he would blame the Israelis for that too.
