Many (if not most) employees get COLA increases: government workers, union members, retired people through social security. Your federal income taxes are adjusted for inflation now. The bracket levels are adjusted for inflation. There is a real difference between a 10% profit made in one year and the same profit made over 10 years. The value in the latter case in most cases hasn't kept up with inflation.
