Well, we will disagree.

And when ten years from now you and Dan are invited to sit in the Presidential box for Ammo's Lincoln Center debut and are invited to bring one guest, and you decide to invite Karen, I'm betting that you hope she shows up in something fancier than stretch pants and a T-shirt.

If it is a matter of being kind to the pixilated, that is one thing. But we were supposed to take the matter seriously, as an expression of someone competent and accountable. Of course it would be best to ignore the issue, rather than increasing the harm by making a scene. But that does not resolve whether Auntie is at fault. I am not, in fact, assuming from the description that her dress is casual but smart. I am assuming that she stands out like a sore thumb, or there would be no contretemps. To stack it so that the groom's mother is necessarily a shrieking harridan begs the question, and is not worth a discussion. Only if there is a likelihood that a substantial portion of the party will be taken aback by the way Auntie is clad does it make it worth the bandwidth. How about if she showed up in bermuda shorts and flip flops? Still no harm? When does she cease to be an adorable eccentric and start to be a self- involved kook?
